The Asbestos Pledge NI is a collaborative initiative between HSENI and training providers which aims to deliver free asbestos awareness training. The initiative is targeting tradesmen who can access the training on a “first come- first served” basis. It will run from January 2013 through to March 2013.
The main asbestos-related diseases are mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. In Northern Ireland over the past five years there has been an average of 40 deaths each year due to mesothelioma and asbestosis has caused or contributed to 20 deaths each year. Estimates for lung cancer attributed to asbestos suggest that 40 deaths occur each year.
People whose occupation has involved construction- related trades have been identified as at particular risk of exposure to asbestos.
This initiative follows on from HSENI’s 2009 Hidden Killer campaign (aimed at Tradesmen) and its 2010 Duty to Manage campaign (aimed at Duty Holders).
Training is available via both e-learning and classroom-based courses.
